SABR G&S Fantasy Baseball Leagues – Draft Results

The SABR Games and Simulations Committee recently completed live salary cap drafts in three leagues for their inaugural season of competition. The draft results and commentary from a number of team owners are included below for your enjoyment. You can view our progress during the season along with league rules here: SABR Fantasy Leagues

A few observations before we get to the rosters:

  1. The consensus steal of the draft was getting Cardinals’ top prospect Jordan Walker at $2, which happened across two leagues. He went to the New Zealand Tuataras for $18 in League 2, which, after a monster spring, might prove to be closer to his actual value. The other two leagues were more conservative about taking a chance on a rookie making his debut in the show this season, but couldn’t pass him up when he fell late.
  2. It will hardly surprise anyone that the timing of the draft matters. Later drafts have the advantage of additional spring training games, but more importantly, current injury updates. Top players who will miss significant time due to injury, such as Jose Altuve, can be gotten at a bargain closer to the season as the impact of his injury becomes clearer. In order of the dates of the draft, he went for $27, then $17 a day later, and finally for $6 the following week. Yordan Alvarez, who was injured in the spring, but was healthy by Opening Day, is a much better value at $36-$37 than at $49.
  3. Aaron Judge set the pace for player value. Last year’s AL MVP received the highest bid in every league. Shohei Ohtani’s value hinges on league rules of how he can be used. In these leagues, he cannot accrue statistics on both sides of the ball even when he is both pitching and batting on that day. If he could accrue hitting and pitching numbers in the same game, no doubt his value would have risen, though it’s anyone’s guess if he could have dethroned “the Judge”.
  4. There is a hometown bias. Pinstripe Pride 28 owner Michael Mandelkorn, a Yankees fan, admitted to being “caught up in a moment” regarding Anthony Volpe. (The rookie had otherwise gone for $1-$2.) I (Cal) felt more comfortable with my valuing of my hometown Detroit Tigers, but had to fight the tendency to keep bidding to order to add them to the Belle Isle Sliders.

We would love to hear observations from our readers. Who did we miss on? What were our tendencies? Take a look at our rosters below:

Post-Draft Q&A – Derek Bain

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
Be aggressive in my pursuit of several top targets in Trout, Betts, Tatis. Try to acquire several talented players that I don’t have in other leagues (Luis Robert, Wander Franco, Byron Buxton, Logan Gilbert, MJ Melendez, Nick Lodolo).
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
No but I didn’t have enough money at the end to make an offer for Jordan Walker.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
Jordan Walker $2 to the Belle Isle Sliders is an absolute steal! Jacob deGrom ($20) to the Jokers is another great risk/reward play. For my team, I thought Buxton would go higher than $9 but given the risk with his injury history, I understand it.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
Sandlot PF Flyers spent $226 on 7 superstars in the first 41 nominations, leaving him with a couple $2 players and 21 at $1 each.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
I wish I had an extra dollar or two to drop on Jordan Walker.

Post-Draft Q&A – Bart Ewing

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and were you able to implement it? –
Not really, I suspected I would spread the risk which I did. On pitching, I used Stuff + ratings
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
Well, not really. I’m pretty pleased compared to where other big names were going for $27 for Strider was a little over what I wanted but I felt there was upside
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
There are tons of $1 players all over, I think the league going forward may want to examine the ratios of money/ players. $260 is usually for 23 players, we’ve added an extra UT and pitcher and factored in the reserve spots into the same $260 – big players were going to get their money but it ultimately made all the $1 players inevitable.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
Increase the available $ at the draft to be in line with the ratio of the usual game. I didn’t even know the reserve players were in the auction- never had a league that does that before and – The early Judge and someone else crossing 50 almost 60 was wild.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Sure but I felt early the prices were so inflated it would pay off to wait as long as there were good targets. The guys I targeted mostly were under cost by the time I put them up- love my MI- lot of good teams though

Post-Draft Q&A – J. Cal Davenport

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
My main strategy was to get a lot of what I thought were undervalued players. I think others were on the same page about was valuable though.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
No, if the cost was too much, I dropped out.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
    Other team’s’ bargains: Kolten Wong – $1, Trent Grisham – $1, Paul Goldschmidt – $27
My bargains: Jordan Walker – $2, Joey Meneses – $3
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
The $1 bargain dropoff was later, but more steep than I expected.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Several. I had too much salary remaining at the end and should have been more aggressive in bidding for Bryan Reynolds, Riley Greene, Ketel Marte, Kris Bryant, etc.

Post-Draft Q&A – Derek Bain

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
Wait a bit longer, hang on to my money and compete for mid-level talent. I also wanted to acquire some players that I don’t have in my other leagues.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
I came up short in my other drafts and was determined to get Jordan Walker in an least one league. We’ll see if he’s a bust or bargain for $18.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
I picked up Wander Franco for $10. Salvador Perez for $13 to the Tampa Yankees was a bargain as well.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
Meadows Blues spent $212 in the first 24 nominations and the Newark Bears shelled out $135 on four starting pitchers. I’ll be interested to see how those moves pan out.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Yes, several starting pitchers and first baseman in particular. I ended up with Josh Naylor $2 at 1B.

Post-Draft Q&A – Michael Mandelkorn

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
Prioritize hitting over pitching and focus on positions with greater scarcity within their tier.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
Unfortunately yes.  Spending $17 on Anthony Volpe is likely an overpay.  I’m a Yankee fan and I think I got caught up in a moment.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
I believe Cristian Javier went for $13.  That is an absolute steal.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
    Nothing in particular
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Yes, Cristian Javier.  I tried to bid again late but was a second too late.

Post-Draft Q&A – Brett Bosley

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
Not any particular strategy per se – however, I knew I wanted to focus on at least 1-2 solid starting pitchers, and hopefully getting both cather positions filled with solid options. I also didn’t want to overspend a ton on players I liked, and I really had a list of guys I focused on going in. I think I accomplished my first goal (drafted Ohtani 1st overall to kick us off), and just feel indifferent on accomplishing my others.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
Yes – I think later in the draft I felt most guys were being overspent on, which was frustrating. I’m honestly not sure yet if I’m ok being semi-agressive early then looked for value later, or if I should have been a little more reserved to start and really take advantage of buying some value later. I think I did fall somewhere in the middle of that. I probably overpayed on Austin Riley ($30) when I could have had someone like Gunnar Henderson ($19) just a few picks later. Could have gave me a little more leverage later on. I also think spending $8 on Bryce Harper was a little bit of a risk at the point in the draft, but I felt if my lineup can survive a while and add him in later in the season, it couldn’t hurt. A high risk, high reward play.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
I think the Alamo City Defenders getting Jeff McNeil for $9 was a steal. Guy routinely hits for a high average and finds extra bases. I was slightly disappointed I didn’t make a more aggressive move for him. However, I was able to secure Brandon Lowe ($6) and Ketel Marte ($4) at the same position for $1 less combined so I can’t complain too much.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
I thought I was going to be more aggressive obtaining bullpen arms and outfielders. Turns out, it seems everyone really wanted those as well and those seemed like the positions that were overpayed by larger margins. I backed out on many bidding wars for those guys, and came out weaker in those spots. I think my early aggression on Bobby Witt Jr. and Austin Riley (combined $60) hampered my ability to be aggressive in these other areas.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
McNeil as I mentioned, as well as Byron Buxton. I had him as a major target and I let him go. But I think Adley Rutschman is my main take away. As I mentioned, I really wanted to secure two good catchers, and I think I could have spent a little more on obtaining him.

Post-Draft Q&A – Derek Bain

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
I targeted Ronald Acuna Jr. since I don’t have him in any other leagues. Fill in gaps with prospects and a few veterans coming off sub-par or injury-plagued seasons.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
I wanted Devin Williams but didn’t think he would go to $20.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
Acuna $36 was a bargain in my mind – I thought he’d go in the $40 range. David Robertson $1 could save 30 games for the Mets. Corbin Carroll for $19 (Nooby Doo) could easily exceed that value.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
I’m not a White Sox fan but somehow ended up with Oscar Colas in every league, so we’re hoping he locks down the RF job for the Pale Hose. Jordan Walker $2 to the B’more GoldGlover squad.. I didn’t have any money left to bid on him.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Besides Jordan Walker, I wish I would have bid higher on Byron Buxton ($8, Gypsy Queens)

Post-Draft Q&A – Sven Müncheberg

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
My strategy was to draft a balanced team, with an equal mix of superstars and medium and low cost players. I ranked all positions using the Fangraphs auction calculator and sorted them into dozens (since the league has 12 teams). Then I picked a player from each dozen as my target, so that I would draft one first baseman from the best dozen, one second baseman from the first dozen and so on. I did not always select the best player from the first dozen as this would be too expensive. Instead I tried to select one No. 1, one No. 2 and so on until one No. 12. For outfielders I made five dozens, for starting pitchers six dozens and for relief pitchers four dozens. And then I selected one outfielder from each dozen, one starting pitcher from each dozen and so on. For each of my targets I noted the estimated auction value from Fangraphs, to pick a realistic team that will cost no more than $260. I also targeted a 70/30 split for hitting and pitching, as recommended by several fantasy baseball podcasts.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players? Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
During the draft I realized that the superstars were drafted way above their predicted auction values, while the medium level players were cheaper and that tons of players were available at 1$ each. Therefore I was unable to acquire some of my top players and after 13 players I was already down to $1 per remaining draft slot. In the end I managed to draft 14 of my 30 targets, which is probably a good result.
  3. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
It seems as if I drafted not enough HR hitters, so probably I should have spent more on some sluggers. I spent $20 less than planned on hitters. After the draft and the first two rounds of free agent pickups, I had some free time and I love spreadsheets. So I copied the 12 rosters with the ESPN predictions into a spreadsheet, added up the numbers and assigned the roto points. Mark Warren (B’more Gold Glover) suggested that I share my findings here. There are some errors in the prediction, because I could only consider the currently set lineups (which may change) without the bench players. This is because not all teams have the same number of bench players due to injuries. One team (Tampa Toms) even has three roster slots open (2 OF, 1 RP), so their numbers are definitely underestimated.
    What’s interesting:
The four best teams have the lowest number of $1 players and among the four last place teams are the three teams with the most $1 players. So it seems that it pays off not to overpay for the superstars.

Post-Draft Q&A – Chuck McGill

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
No, no particular strategy, except for wanting to pick up Buehler and Story at the end to stash on the IL for next season.  I accidentally got both J.T. Realmuto and Will D. Smith, the #1 and #3 catchers.  After I got Realmuto, I wasn’t looking to get Smith also, but I was doing a bit of price enforcing, and ended up with him.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.  A hitter is a hitter. Having one team that was being computer picked kind of threw a monkey wrench into the whole draft, because the computer would keep bidding up to it’s value.  That kind of price enforcing was a bit irritating, and it made me hesitant to bring up some players that I wanted for fear of being outbid by the computer.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
I went a bit more on Corbin Burnes than I wanted to, but I wanted an ace, and he was reasonable at $36
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
I’m sure there will end up being a lot of bargains, based on all the $1 players there were.  On my team, I was very pleased to get Masataka Yoshida for $2 and Garrett Whitlock for $1 along with Tyler Glasnow for $5, who might turn out to be a bargain.  Triston Casas, on the Louisville Sluggers, could turn out to be a bargain.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
I was a bit surprised by how much the top players were going for, which lead to a lot of $1 players.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
I left myself a bit weak in saves, so I could have gone a bit more in the quest for another closer, but with the churn rate of closers, there should be plenty of opportunities to pick some guys up in FAAB.

Post-Draft Q&A – Mark Warren

  1. Did you have a particular strategy going into the draft and where you able to implement it?
I focused on hitting, spending about 80% on hitting, because starting pitching is fairly deep this year.
I considered position scarcity at 3B and OF – there are fairly big drop-offs after the first tier at those positions.
Lastly, I tried to make sure that I had about $20 for my last 10 players.  That 2/1 ratio allowed me to snipe a few players from other teams that could only make $1 bids.
  2. Did you spend more than you wanted on any particular players?
A lot of other folks appeared to do the same thing so I ended up overpaying for Mookie Betts ($43) and Alex Bregman ($16).
I considered the reduction of shifts, and aggressively went after 3 players that should benefit from that change – Kyle Tucker, Corey Seager, and Matt Olson.
I got 2 of them, although I probably paid a bit more for Seager ($25) than I should have considering that SS is a fairly deep position.
  3. Who was the biggest bargain (your team or a competitor)?
I only spent $10 or more on only 2 starting pitchers, because starting pitching is fairly deep this year.
There were a lot of bargain starting pitchers under $5 once the bulk of the spending was done.
I was happy to get a 200 strikeout pitcher in Charlie Morton for $3, and low ERA guys like Drew Rasmussen for $1.
  4. Any surprises (dollar amounts, strategies, etc.)?
I watched a couple of other teams in our league spend a ton of money early – one team spent $184 on just 4 players.
Great players I might add, but putting themselves in a position to chase $1 players.
  5. Do you wish you spent an extra dollar or two on any players?
Since this is a saves only league, closers went for a premium.  I took 4 fringe closers for a total of $6 in hopes that maybe 2 work out,
and that maybe I can pick up replacement closers later from the waiver wire.

Supplemental Statistics, Charts and Graphs along with a discussion forum are offered at TuataraSoftware.com. In Hardball Retrospective, I placed every ballplayer in the modern era (from 1901-present) on their original teams. Using a variety of advanced statistics and methods, I generated revised standings for each season based entirely on the performance of each team’s “original” players. I discuss every team’s “original” players and seasons at length along with organizational performance with respect to the Amateur Draft (or First-Year Player Draft), amateur free agent signings and other methods of player acquisition. Season standings, WAR and Win Shares totals for the “original” teams are compared against the real-time or “actual” team results to assess each franchise’s scouting, development and general management skills.

Don Daglow (Intellivision World Series Major League Baseball, Earl Weaver Baseball, Tony LaRussa Baseball) contributed the foreword for Hardball Retrospective. The foreword and preview of my book are accessible here

“Hardball Retrospective - Addendum 2014 to 2016” supplements my research for Hardball Retrospective, providing retroactive standings based on Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win Shares (WS) for each "original" team over the past three seasons (2014-2016). Team totals from 2010 - 2013 are included for reference purposes. “Addendum” is available in paperback and digital (Kindle) format at Amazon.com.
