Hello and I’d like to invite you to tune in to the Franchise Stars Baseball League project I have developed for MLB The Show (if you are of the group with a disdain for console games, I’d love to change your mind, as I get realistic results because I work to do so!)
The FSBL is a “legends league with a twist.”
Each franchise has a master pool of 100 players, ranked by WAR for the team at their respective positions. Each franchise’s master pool includes 8 catchers and 8 at each infield spot, 20 outfielders, 25 starting pitchers and 15 relievers.
For the initial season, each franchise started with a randomly drawn 40 players from that master pool.
Each year, a rookie draft is held by which teams add four random players from the remaining guys in that 100 player pool PLUS one random Negro Leaguer.
All players are rated using formulas I’ve created using more than 20 years of experience in roster development, incorporating standard and sabermetric data, as well as Clay Davenport’s Davenport Translations to set players across eras on the same playing field (i.e., power hitters from the deadball era will play like power hitters placed into a more modern landscape so as to better represent their talent relative to their time and place in the pantheon of greats…Home Run Baker isn’t hitting 8 homers a season, for example).
Before I ended up in print journalism, my goal was broadcasting. This project, now in June of Year 3, has brought me back to that passion as I call a National League and American League Game of the Week from each Saturday on the league schedule.
The result is a fun, realistic celebration of baseball history. I’ve referred to the Legends Sports Universe, which includes other sports as well, as my “Sports Minecraft” – a world of my creation playing out before my eyes. And, thankfully, I’ve built a great community who come along for the ride.
