Back to 1982 – Yanks Sweep in the Dome

1982 Spotlight: Games of the Week

New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins

Weather – N/A Singles: 19/11 HR 14/14

Overview

You know how in every season there is one stretch, where the team will either wilt and fold or get off the canvas and come back fighting? This is certainly how it was with the New York Yankees this past weekend in Minnesota vs. The Twins. Coming off losses in their last six of seven games, including three each to Baltimore and Milwaukee, the Yanks needed to bounce back in a big way and bounce back they did.

After winning the first game in the series 2-0 beating Frank Viola, the Yanks had a 6-4 lead in Game Two thanks to a two-run HR by Dave Collins and RBI singles by Graig Nettles and Wille Randolph. A HR by Gary Ward off Doyle Alexander made it 6-5 and Minnesota got two runners on in the seventh, when the Yanks turned to George Frazier. The righthander got DH Mickey Hatcher to pop out to Randolph at second and then struck out catcher Tim Laudner to end the threat. Closer Goose Gossage game in and got the save in the 9th behind strikeouts to 3B Gary Gaetti and 1b Kent Hrbek.

In game three, the Bombers found themselves behind 9-4 heading into the top of the 8th, when the offense, which has been all but dormant in the last two weeks, came through in a big way, getting 7 runs over the final two innings, including a 4-run ninth inning with consecutive hits from DH Bobby Murder, Collins, 1b John Mayberry and C Butch Wynegar. Frazier and Gossage again provided the punch out of the bullpen, giving the Yanks an 11-10 comeback victory and a three-game sweep in the Dome.

On the year, the Yanks are 58-42 (8 games ahead of their real-life pace) as they prepare for KC and Toronto over the next week. As Mel Allen says, How About that!

That’s all for now, folks. Until Clubber Lang gets up from 69 consecutive punches and knocks out Rocky Balboa to retain his title in the nail-biting rematch……follow all the action of my replay here:
