I started this replay ten days ago with the 1982 Yankees. Here’s an update:
Currently I have the team at 15-5, which I am both shocked and beleaguered about for various reasons explained below.
STARTING PITCHING
It’s not good. The rotation currently is Guidry, Righetti, Rawley, Erickson and Alexander in that order. Guidry has been the only one who has been reliable. Righetti walks a ton of guys; Erickson is hit or miss as is Alexander. Rawley’s card for me has been straight up trash. I struggle with getting my starter to the 7th.
RELIEF PITCHING
Goose is well, The Goose. He gets a ton of strikeouts and the one loss that he has, he blew a save due to overuse. The problem is I really have no bridge to him. May, LaRoche, Frazier, are all unreliable at best. Frazier is not a right-handed setup man in the truest sense, and May is a reverse lefty for me so far, meaning he has gotten righties out more than lefties. The fear is I am using Goose more and more and earlier in games.
For things that have gone well
SMALLEY
He is coming up biggie. He is my every day SS and I can live with his Def SS-4 16, when he is hitting like this. He actually is anchoring the middle of the order, generally batting 5th, with already 7 GW hits in the 15 wins. I know!
The Schedule
I started by playing their home games in order: Tex, Chi, Det, CAL, SEA, OAK, MIN – aside from Cal, no one scares me and although Det can sneak up on you, I didn’t have that yet. We have one of a ton of close games – averaging 4.6 runs a game, but much of those are scored after the 7th. I wonder if I can keep this pace up.

Nettles is a 3b 3 35; his range causes him to make errors constantly
I don’t have another middle infielder besides Robertson – Milbourne and Dent who played there during the year are carded on Cleveland and Texas, so I am stuck with Smalley and Nettles on the left side
I have what seems like 275 OF and 1B – Mayberry, Hobson, Pinella, Gamble, Mazzilli – which leaves significant holes.
I know where the leaks are. They have not sprung…yet.
